Our Fire Department History Books

For the truly hardcore, there’s “Cincinnati Fire Stations,” which offers meticulous research with photos and details of all fire stations in the city of Cincinnati since the fire department was incorporated in the mid 1800s. It also features many rare color photos along with the history of the various fire companies and their buildings. Take a look back in time in Cincinnati lore with this fantastic history.

A smaller but no less significant local history of firefighting can be found in “Edison, (N.J.) Firefighting.” During the early part of the 20th century, five separate volunteer fire companies independently organized to protect separate sections of Raritan Township, currently known as Edison. The township was divided by fire districts, each containing elected fire commissioners with political and economic power. In 1926, the first career firefighter was hired, and since then, over 250 career firefighters have taken the oath. Edison Firefighting features images, memorabilia, and photographs from the early days of bucket brigades and horse-drawn carriages to current personnel and apparatus. Significant fires, explosions, and rescues that Edison firefighters confronted throughout the years are revealed within this fascinating book.

There are also histories available of firefighting in Charlotte, N.C., Allegheny County, MD, Roanoke, VA, Washington, D.C. and other major cities.

For those ready to graduate from a local to a state view, try “Disasters and Heroic Rescues of California.” This comprehensive look at the Golden State covers blizzards and earthquakes to floods and fires, offering a fascinating look at real-life drama. This book includes nineteen such disasters, including: the Donner Party's tragic struggle to survive the winter of 1846-1847, the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, the 1910 bombing of the Los Angeles Times building, the Jackson Argonaut Mine Fire of 1922, the wreck of seven destroyers in peacetime off Point Arguello in 1923 in heavy fog, the Crescent City tsunami of 1964, the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake during the World Series, and more.
