An experienced psychologist's unique insight helps families cope with the built-in tension and daily stress of a fire service job - whether career or volunteer. She shows loved ones how to live in harmony with the firehouse, which is the firefighter's "other" family. Kirschman presents a very balanced view of the adjustments and communication that are necessary from firefighters and their families, detailing ways that everyone can work to minimize misunderstandings. She particularly addresses the reticence that most firefighters have about sharing the more difficult aspects of their job and offers ways that firefighters can expand their willingness to talk to their families. At the same time, she helps families allay their fears, learn the boundaries, and develop thicker skin, so as to not feel excluded simply because they aren't told all the details. Kirschman spent a lot of time interviewing firefighters and their families, and earned her stripes. Additionally, she has provided organizational consultation, training, and crisis intervention to the Palo Alto (CA) Fire Department, and really nails the issues that face firefighters, EMS workers, and their families. She addresses occupational health and safety issues along with domestic concerns including unpredictable schedules, lack of communication, anxiety, and ruined plans. Lots of anecdotes and practical examples show families how they can pull together when job stress threatens to spill over onto home turf. Her examples are very realistic and easy to understand and she never resorts to pop psychology or psychobabble. Many trainers and chiefs have recommended that this be mandatory reading for every firefighter and his/her family. I definitely agree, having "been there, done that" myself.
