Long Beach Fire Department's adaptability has been tested by a wide variety of disasters that have marked it as a unique firefighting force on the West Coast. Formed in 1897, the department's first big test came a scant 36 years later with the devastating Long Beach earthquake in which its own Fire House No. 1 was reduced to rubble. The topography, location, and diversity of the city's architecture kept the force's skills sharp: from fighting oilfield blazes through the 20th century; to responding to docks, warehouses, and ships at its bustling port; to the challenges of downtown decline and redevelopment; re-introduction of mass-transit in today's automobile age; and mutual-aid response during oil spills, wildland/urban interface fires, and hazardous materials incidents. Vintage photographs in the book, selected and arranged by the Long Beach Firefighters Museum, include more than 200 views of vehicles and other equipment, chiefs and parades, and steadfast members of the LBFD.
