During the early years of his public safety career Dr. Gasaway was self-admittedly obsessed with learning everything he could about making good decisions at emergency scenes. He set out to glean every possible lesson he could about how to make good decisions at high-consequence incidents. To help him along the way he read every near-miss, case study and line-of-duty death report he could get his hands on believing if he could learn from the mistakes of others, it would help him be a better commander. It must have worked. He served for 25 years without having a serious firefighter casualty incident. He notes that he felt very accomplished!
Then, in 2004, he began to study how lessons from brain science apply to public safety and he realized something. He wasn't all that accomplished. He had been lucky! He quickly realized these lessons are catastrophically vital for operational decision makers to keep responders safe. What he learned in his study of neuroscience and cognitive psychology was eye opening for him and it will be for you too! Most of the research in neuroscience is being conducted for the benefit of aerospace, aviation, medicine, nuclear power, and the military not public safety! In nearly all respects, the first responder community has been "out of the loop" when it comes to understanding how brain science research applies to our profession.
This DVD series is designed to get you "into the loop" and reveals secrets hospitals, airlines, NASA and the Department of Defense know about how to improve decision making. The program explores and discusses how experts make decisions in high stress, ever-changing environments.

Mental Management of Emergencies is one of the crowning achievements of Dr. Richard Gassaway’s career. Highly educated and experienced in the field of public safety, Gassaway does what so few other authors in his field have done: observed the management of emergencies from a mental perspective in terms of the decision-making skills of responders.
Mental Management of Emergencies is the result of decades of in-depth academic research and firsthand experience in the field of emergency response. This creates an exceptionally well-balanced perspective of the subject areas discussed. Some educational resources for first responders are assembled quickly, but this text represents the culmination of years of research, and it shows.
