Peter Canning's route to the streets as a paramedic is an interesting one. He spent 12 years in political service, first working for a Connecticut senator in Washington, DC, and later in the Connecticut state health department when the senator became governor. Canning's writing is peerless. First he lets us in on how he struggled in the beginning of his career, hoping he'd be good enough, hoping he'd make the right call, hoping he'd meet the high standards he set for himself. Later he vents his frustration with the system: he chafes when patients call him an ambulance driver and when doctors snub him; and he loves it when nurses compliment his work. He gets a gutful of nuisance calls. But, he knows he's made a difference, and that's what matters most to him. He lets us in on his near-burnout and how he turned it around.
