This extraordinary book almost defies description. The story is about cats -- and people -- who couldn't get along until a night of rioting brings them together. Daniel, his mother, and his cat, Jasmine, experience a fire in their apartment building on one night in the 1993 Los Angeles riots. Jasmine is missing. Mrs. Kim's store is looted, and her big, fat, orange-colored cat is also missing. Later, a firefighter brings the two cats to the shelter. The cats get along, and it appears that the people might get along now, too. The acrylic paintings are superimposed on a background of debris that was gathered from the riot-torn streets. You have to see it to understand. This book won the very prestigious Caldecott Medal for illustration.
