The occurrence of a line-of-duty death in a training exercise in Lairdsville, New York was a factor leading the author to develop the First Edition of this Checklist.  The Second Edition is the result of the popularity of the original publication.  A further incentive was provided by Fire Chief Alan Brunacini in a comment regarding out need to get retiring fire service leaders to "leave the slides," i.e. capture their knowledge and experience.  This Checklist is on attempt to preserve lessons learned.

In today's fire service it is not enough to have tenure to be successful in a Chief's position. Chiefs need to know the applicable laws and standards to help them keep their firefighters alive.  There are also numerous personal and tactical issues that combine to determine the success or failure of a Fire Chief.  Today's Fire Chief must be a leader, a coach, a loyal administrator, and a counselor for the members of his or her team.

The Checklist is intended to improve and enhance professional leadership by Fire Chiefs in all areas of the fire service, and is dedicated first to the memory of firefighters who have died unnecessarily in the line of duty, and second to all the Fire Chiefs who place firefighter safety as their number one priority.
