FOR THE RECORD: REPORT WRITING FOR THE FIRE SERVICE (3rd Edition) is a comprehensive text and workbook designed for basic, remedial, and advanced training in writing professional incident and fire investigation reports.
In print for more than 30 years, this exciting new edition contains all of the same valuable instructional material as the previous edition but also includes fresh content specifically relevant to fire service reports and developed in collaboration with co-author, Laz Lahera. Lahera is a 30-year fire service veteran with a large department, a retired company officer, and a current fire service instructor at Miramar College in Southern California in the Fire Protection Technology Program.
Highlights of the 3rd Edition
The text is now divided into two sections. The first section contains all of the major concepts and applications found in the previous (2nd) edition of this text and focuses on the fundamentals of report writing – skills applicable to any type of report writing.
The second section is all new content and turns more specifically to report writing in the fire service. Section Two offers students and fire service practitioners more exposure to and exercises in the types of writing they will perform during the course of their regular duties.

Specific New Content in the 3rd Edition:
Chapter 7 (Tactical Report Writing: Keys to Reducing Civil Liability) discusses reports as legal public documents and presents Graham’s Rules for Improving Incident Documentation (GRIID), including a look at High Risk/Low Frequency Events.
Chapter 8 (Fire Incident Narratives) outlines different methods for structuring fire incident narratives (FIRES, POST/SIRI, etc.).
Chapter 9 (Emergency Medical Services Narratives) explains what a PCR is and why it is important, presents different formats of EMS narratives (SOAP, CHART), and explains how to document OPQRST assessments and SAMPLE histories.
Chapter 10 (Fire Investigation Reports) presents how to construct an origin-and-cause report following a fire investigation, including the importance of adhering to and documenting the scientific method.
Chapter 11 (Other Written Documentation) covers memorandums, performance evaluations, and discipline reports.
Other Highlights of the 3rd Edition:
All in-chapter practice, identification, and improvement exercises have been streamlined and renamed, simply, “Applications,” and the Application Answers have been moved from the chapters to an Answer Key at the back of the text, to improve both visual and reading flow of the chapter content.
All of the self-tests that used to appear at the back of the text have been removed from print and are electronically available on the publisher’s website.
Numerous other resources have been added to the publisher’s website (InnSysPub.com), including chapter summaries, a video library, a sample origin & cause report, and a probationary evaluation document, with new content being added over time.
