Between them, Steve, John, and Garry have decades of real-world, hands-on fire and rescue experience. They put their heads together and came up with a completely new approach to firefighter training, while still being compliant with the NFPA standards. This book is 100% outside the box, focusing on what really matters, and leaving out what is not important. The What Matters stuff will make better and safer firefighters. The Not So Important stuff is nice info, and can be added to the knowledge repertoire at a later time. For example, What Matters is: identifying the fire problem on the scene, getting water on a fire, venting, staffing, protecting responders first, arriving in one piece, having applicable building construction info, understanding and applying the "go in/don't go in" rules, and having competent command officers. What Doesn't Matter includes: how a smoke detector works and what the inside of a fire hydrant looks like. Complete instructor materials are available at a very nominal charge making implementation of this training program a snap. The first part of the book is the same as First Things First, our #1930. Part 2 of the book concentrates Inside Operations and on the learning objectives and demonstrable skills for Firefighter I, the 3rd part of the book is Leading the Team, and focuses on Firefighter II objectives and skills.
